Are you an Independent Writer? | yourwritingmentor.com

          • feels free to write about their passion, inspiration and anything close to their heart.
          • is an individual who is confident in expressing their opinion.
          • is self-directed who easily finds topics to write about.

?

Here are three tips to help you become an Independent Writer.

Some experts will tell you to identify your audience to the extent of writing a lengthy description detailing likes and dislikes of your readers. Even going so far as making a composite sketch, a drawing, or maybe a collage of characteristics. However, this is not what I mean when I ask you to remember your audience. The first reader you must excite, move, and stimulate, is YOU!

Yes, You. You have to be passionate about the stuff you are writing before anyone else will be. You have to believe in yourself first before asking others. When your zeal is transparent and contagious, your readers get carried along with you. You have to build a relationship with them. The details matter as much as the flow, delivery, and construction of the sentences. You are the author and by making it apparent how you yourself are so invested in the story, your readers will be as well.

Your message (or your story, I use them interchangeably), needs to be clear and compelling. Just as your readers connect with you when they feel your passion, they will be compelled to act by your enthusiasm and excitement about your subject. Let them know why you got involved. What keeps you involved? Until I had breast cancer ? twice- I never felt I had the stuff to write a book, or to speak about unleashing our authentic selves and to stop holding ourselves back. Now, I view my breast cancer as a gift, and a chief motivating factor in living my life to the fullest. That is why I founded The Unleashed Homemakertm and, I am passionate about helping other women rewrite their story to create their own happily ever after. Through tapping into my creativity, I found the healing benefits of writing and sharing my writing. I am a ?permission granter? in encouraging other women not to wait until they have a health crisis to take care of themselves. You only have one life, this is not a dress rehearsal, and it?s up to each individual to choose to live that life to the fullest.

3. ?Speak in Your Own Voice

When you are clear about your message and know your audience/reader, then you can?t help but speak in a voice that is authentically your own. Be true to yourself. Write the way you would have a conversation. I have been told that my easy conversational style is one of the reasons people like my writing. Most importantly, be sure the language you use in your writing is language you are comfortable with in your everyday speech. Quoting from people you admire is wonderful, but your readers want to hear from you. We all have favorite phrases we use to express ourselves. Use them in your writing. Your writing voice will be stronger for it.
