So you want to become a tattoo artist? Learning about the history of tattoo art, studying history and attending conventions are absolutely fundamental in rousing your muse and fostering your potential. As you?re probably aware, conventions are growing in interest and attendance the world over. As an artist, they?re the place to meet peers and observing different approaches. Here?s a run through of 3 of the worlds best conventions.
The Rites of Passage festival in Melbourne was founded by tattoo artist extraordinaire, Claire Reid. Not surprising then the festivals vibrant and effervescent traits which characterize Claire?s work. This festival, more than any other, merges art and music and environmental awareness as well as world class artists from the world over. Rites of Passage takes place from April 27th.
London Tattoo Convention is held at the famous Tobacco Dock, Wapping in September. The event was established in 2005 and features 250 of the worlds finest artists including Jose Lopez, Shige and Robert Hernandez. In 2009 the event broke the Guinness World Record for most people being tattooed simultaneously. In recent years this convention has vied for public affections with the London Tattoo Show.
Promoted as the ?The Biggest Show On Earth?, the Las Vegas Tattoo Convention is the invention of Mario Barth. Barth?s goal from the beginning has been to shine a light on the craft of being an artist; an interesting turn for a man who grew up in Austria when to be inked was illegal. The Convention ensues at The Mirage Casino in October and features an elite case of artists, artist seminars and premier rock bands. That?s why organizers expect to see over 40,000 attendees again.
While these conventions may not be on your doorstep, there are of course hundreds of notable tattoo conventions the world over. From Budapest to Nepal tattoo artists gather to network, share ideas and celebrate the art. Lest you?re doing the same as an aspiring artist, you?re just not in the game.
