Verizon's proposed spectrum deal with the big cable companies is getting closer to approval. Most recently we've learned that the mobile carrier is willing to agree to just about anything in order to win approval from the Department of Justice.
The deal would involve the purchase of 122 AWS spectrum licenses from well-known providers like Comcast and Time Warner. If all goes as planned, this will help boost Verizon's 4G LTE network by providing access to more airwaves in the 1700MHz band.
So far, according to The Wall Street Journal, the mobile carrier has agreed to restrictions on cross marketing, where both Verizon and Comcast compete directly for cable, internet and phone services. To put it simply, the two companies will not be permitted to team up on marketing in those areas.
Concessions like these are meant to help with antitrust concerns by limiting side deals with the cable companies. The DoJ and FCC are currently reviewing Verizon's plans for the spectrum purchase, which was originally proposed by the carrier in December.
