Changes made to Pennsylvania workers' compensation insurance ...

Thousands of workplace accidents happen every year. When a person is injured at work or while performing a job function, they are most often eligible to file a workers' compensation claim. Pennsylvania passed a law in 1915 creating the State Workers' Insurance Fund. SWIF is a public source for employers to purchase workers' compensation insurance. A recent consolidation of divisions in SWIF promises greater efficiency in handling such claims.

Until recently, workers' compensation claims have been handled through two divisions: SWIF's field operations division and claims services division. These two divisions are merging to become the claims services division. SWIF hopes the consolidation of the two divisions will eliminate redundancies in the claims system and make the administrative portions of claims processes more efficient. Employers should not see any service interruptions during the transition.

Pennsylvania has been at the forefront of workers' compensation since its inception in the 1880s. The Workers' Compensation Act created an insurance system for injured employees to gain monetary assistance for work injuries without having to sue their employer and meet a steep burden of proof that the employer's negligence caused the injury. The system continues to evolve to meet the demands of the current workforce.? Almost all employers carry workers' compensation insurance on all employees. An employee injured on the job can file a workers' compensation claim. Under the claim the injured employee may receive monetary assistance with medical bills and possibly a portion of his or her lost wages until the injured employee can return to work.

Work health and safety conditions have greatly improved over the last hundred years but accidents happen. Workers' compensation is an effective tool that benefits both employers and employees.
